Jacksonville Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization


The Transportation Planning Division plays a critical role in Jacksonville.We are a community partner in planning and shaping an effective and safe transportation system.  On a daily basis, staff collects and presents data, analyzes alternatives, reviews plans, and helps guide and protect transportation investments. 

In addition, the City ofJacksonville is designated as the Lead Planning Agency (LPA) for the Jacksonville Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and is responsible for transportation planning within the Jacksonville Urban Area boundary.  The Jacksonville Urban Area includes all incorporate areas of the City of Jacksonville and portions of Onslow County  (2000 Census Population 103,954).  The Jacksonville MPO is the regional transportation planning organization consisting of representatives from the City of Jacksonville, Onslow County, North Carolina Department of Transportation, and area military bases.  The MPO provides the regional, cooperative planning process that serves as the basis for the expenditure of all Federal transportation funds in the area for streets, highways, bridges, public transit, bicycle and pedestrian paths.

US 17 Bypass (U-4007)

The City of Jacksonville held a public hearing on the protection of the U.S. Highway 17 corridor (TIP Project U-4007) on Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at 7 p.m.  The hearing took place in the City Council Chambers at Jacksonville City Hall, 815 New Bridge St., Jacksonville, N.C., 28540.  The maps below illustrate the project design
