 Recreation & Parks
The mission of the City of Jacksonville Recreation and Parks Department is to help make Jacksonville the best place to live, work, and visit by providing exceptional active and passive leisure opportunities for our citizens that will contribute to the development and improvement of individual health and wellness, a sense of community, environmental appreciation, and economic development.
Women's History Month
Let's take this opportunity in March to celebrate just a few women from around the globe who have made a significant contribution to history throughout the world. Please visit the Recreation and Parks page each day this month to learn some interesting facts and celebrate Women's History .
Jane Addams
Jane Addams was only the second woman, the first American woman, to ever be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and was a founder of the U.S. Settlement House movement. The settlement homes were set up to help bring together the lower class and poorer Americans and the middle class, more educated Americans, to help improve the lives of those less fortunate and give them more opportunities. These homes were often funded by charitable donations. Her Nobel Peace Prize was based on her beliefs on women’s special mission to preserve peace.
Special Update
The Jacksonville Recreation and Parks Department is excited to announce the After School Program for the Jacksonville Commons Middle School is taking their program to the Youth Center two days a week. The participants will be bused to the Youth Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In the month of March, the Youth Center will be used every Tuesday and Thursday with the exception of the 18th and 23rd; instead, the students will be at the Youth Center on Wednesday those weeks (the 17th and 24th). The Youth Center is a larger space for the participants and will allow for more activity. The program will still begin at the normal time and the program will end at the normal time, 5:30 PM.
