 Demolition
The City of Jacksoville is committed to eliminating the slum and blight conditions which pose health and safety problems within the community. The Demolition and Clearance Program includes several techniques designed to address this situation. Its purpose is to demolish the structures, which have become unsafe or are health hazards and need to be demolished due to disrepair and neglect.
Early in 1995, the City of Jacksonville adopted a new Minimum Housing Demolition Incentive Policy. This policy was designed to assist those property owners who could not pay for the total cost associated with the demolition and clearance of their property.
In a major effort to reduce the cost of removing these dilapidated structures, several City Departments work closely together. Involved in this joint effort is the Community Development Division, Fire Department and the Public Works Department. The Community Development Division works with the property owners, prepares the necessary documentations, and tests the property for hazardous material prior to demolitions. If the property is suitable for taining, the Fire Department conducts Live Fire Training exercises and burns the structures, providing valuable training to the firefighters. The Public Works Department then removes any debris left behind from the burning of the structure, which also provides an opportunity for training heavy equipment operators.
Guidelines:
- Strucuture must be in a dilapidated condition and pose a health & safety problem
- Strucutre must be un-occupied and located within the city limits
- Strucutre must have no outstanding liens, judgements, taxes or pending litigations
- Structure must be inspected by the City of Jacksonville's Inspections Department
