Metering

The Metering Division consists of 7 employees; 1 superintendent, 1 meter mechanic, and 5 meter readers. This division is responsible for the timely and accurate reading of 14,500 water meters every month, within the first 15 days of the month. Metering falls under the Finance Department to facilitate the close working relationship with U tility Billing staff and to ensure accurate monthly billing.

This division also performs turn-ons, turn-offs; verify repairs, billing re-reads, checks for leaks, sets new meters and handles customer complaints/requests. The meter readers average 1,500 service orders each month. Additionally the monthly suspension list is handled by the Metering Division (approximately 150 accounts per month). Meter readers can average 8 or 9 miles of walking per day.

The Metering Division's mechanic is responsible for the removal, testing, and repairing of water meters in the system. He has a thorough knowledge of meterspecifications and testing techniques and is certified in testing procedures. The division is currently undertaking the task of transitioning to an automated meter reading system which allows meters to be read from within the vehicle via radio signals.
